The 9000 series trains were built at Alstom's factory in Santa Perpètua de la Mogoda (Barcelona). The 58 trains of the 9000 series are part of Alstom's METROPOLIS train line, also used in other networks around the world such as Santo Domingo, Guadalajara (Mexico), and Lima

First services of the 9000 series trains of TMB

The 9000 series trains were initially intended to serve line 9 (hence, in part, the choice of 9000 as the series number). However, delays and stoppages in the construction of L9 due to the lack of funding meant that the trains arrived long before L9 and L10 were operational.

Thus, of the total 58 trains, 39 are adapted for conventional circulation (with cab) suitable for most lines, while the remaining 19 have no cab and are reserved exclusively for automatic lines (L9 and L10).

Chronological summary

  • December 2002: the Barcelona Metropolitan Transport Authority (ATM) orders 50 trains of the 9000 series for the future L9 and L10.
  • June 2006: the first unit arrives at Metro de Barcelona to start testing. It belongs to the first batch of 50 units.
  • September 28, 2006: the first train enters commercial service, specifically on L2.
  • January 7, 2008: the first 9000 runs with passengers on L4.
  • 2015-2016: arrival of the second batch, consisting of 6 units.
  • November 12, 2019: the first of the 2 units of the third batch, of the conventional type with cab, arrives.

Design and construction of the 9000 series

The 9000 series trains were initially designed for L9 and L10, fully automatic driverless lines. Therefore, they did not have a driving cab, but only a front window with a view from the passenger compartment. Having to be used on other lines such as L2 and L4 (lines with automatic driving but assisted by a driver), they were fitted with a complete driving cab.

The units dedicated to serving L9 and L10 were delivered without a driving cab, with a front evacuation ramp and fully automatic.

In summary, the 9000 series is made up of an initial main batch, plus two subsequent expansion batches, as follows:

  • First batch: 50 trains of 5 cars. 34 with cabs at the ends and 16 without cabs
  • Second batch: 6 trains of 5 cars.
  • Third batch: 2 trains of 5 cars with cab.

Interior and body

The interior design is practically the same as that of the 5000 series and 6000 series, although these were manufactured by CAF.

Unlike other series, the 9000 series trains have luminous indicators above the doors on the inside to warn when a door is out of service.

Inside, they have several 17" screens in the central part of each car, which allow the broadcast of pre-recorded videos and basic information about the next station. This video system (innovative for its time) worked poorly from the moment the trains were received and for many years thereafter.

The trains also have an internal and external video surveillance system with cameras. They also have PA system, air conditioning, and line position indicators through LED "thermometers" above the middle of the doors.

As for the doors, they are placed at a standardized distance that allows the closing of platforms, advisable in the case of automatic lines.
