What's Wefer?
WEFER is probably the oldest personal website dedicated to the railway in Spain that is still in operation.
WEFER officially appeared on the Internet on August 14, 1997. At that time, the number of people connected to the Internet in our country was small, although it was increasing rapidly. The connections were slow and most of the pages only contained text, almost all of us were browsing with Netscape 3 (or Mosaic!), the flat rate sounded like science fiction and hardly any company had considered that they could make money with the Internet.
In this context, the amount of Spanish railway information on the net was really scarce. Only a few pages managed to really interest the reader, among which STOL, the AVE pages, the RENFE, FGC and little else stood out.
To see the evolution of this page, if you like technological archeology click here to see the old WEFER from 2008.
WEFER was born with the desire to try to plug this hole a bit, as a non-profit personal project with no intention of competing with anyone, to help popularize this passion for railways in Spain, both inside and outside our borders. For a long time WEFER has been (and still is in some cases) the only place on the Internet where you can see a photograph of a Ferrobús, consult the technical data of a series 276 or 251 locomotive, or learn about a series 1000 unit of the Barcelona Metro. . And also the creator of the only screensaver with real Spanish trains, all completely free of charge.
During these years, the Internet has changed radically, and with it WEFER has also evolved, but maintaining its bases. The main change on the page was made in September 1999, when the accommodation was changed to a free server for its own domain, thus gaining convenience and speed, and was renamed WEFER.COM. In September 2000, the cover and the interactive spaces of the page were also revamped. Finally, in August 2002, the page was remodeled and expanded again. At the beginning of 2005 the structure of the page was remodeled to allow new extensions. The "Catalan Transport Forum" was also launched in collaboration with other web pages, which, due to its success, was separated from wefer.com, taking its own entity and domain (www.transport.cat).
Finally, and after years of abandonment, in June 2020 the new wefer.com was launched, completely revamped using the new Publii static web publishing system, which means the relaunch of the web towards a new era of publications.
