Plaça Catalunya station in Barcelona

The station of Barcelona Plaça Catalunya (PK 367.1 of the line Zaragoza-Lleida-Manresa-Barcelona) is located in the subway on the north side of this emblematic square, in the "Dreta de l'Eixample" neighborhood (although very close to Ciutat Vella) in the municipality of Barcelona, district of Barcelonès.

The station goes from "Plaça Universitat" to "Passeig de Gràcia" passing through Ronda Universitat and the square itself.

La estación de Barcelona Plaça Catalunya began operation on July 1, 1932 as an extension of the "Compañía de Ferrocarriles del Norte" until the center of the city of the Puigcerdà and Manresa lines that ended at the Estación del Norte (next to the current Arc de Triomf station).

A station shared with Metro de Barcelona

Plaça Catalunya station has always been shared with the Metro Transversal (currently L1), which completely changed the original metro station that had been put in service in 1926 strong> under Ronda Universidad, between Rambla Catalunya and Balmes.

The station initially had two railway tracks with a central platform and a subway track on each side, with side platforms for each of them. There was a separation between the subway and the railway, with two independent communal halls located at the ends of the subway platforms, at the intersection of Paseo de Gràcia and Rambla Catalunya, approximately, so that there was a large part of the station without the intermediate level occupied by the current large hall.

The integration in RENFE

  • In 1941 the station became part of RENFE.
  • On June 1, 1977 the line between Plaça Catalunya and Barcelona Sants was extended, extending the platform and creating a new access to the train station from the lobby of the Universitat metro station.
  • In 1983 work was carried out to reform it completely, since it threatened to collapse because it was built with poor quality materials. The deficiencies were detected during some Renfe ventilation works, verifying that the framework of the wall was in a remarkable state of corrosion, having to demolish the slab that covered the station and replace it. At that time, a large unique hall was also created that united the two existing ones until then.
  • In 1992 the Plaça Catalunya station was renovated again, which has barely changed since then.
  • In 2005, the station became dependent on Adif.
