History and information about the Vilafranca de Conflent station (Villefranche-Vernet-les-Bains)

The Vilafranca de Conflent station (Villefranche - Vernet-les-Bains in French) is located in the small town of Fuilla (Cerdanya, Catalunya Nord) It is a key node in the railway network from the French Pyrenees-Orientales. This station serves as the terminal of the lines that connect on the one hand Perpinyà with Vilafranca de Conflent and on the other Vilafranca de Conflent with La Tor de Querol. All of this passing through a natural setting of extraordinary beauty.

Inaugurated in 1895 by the Compagnie des chemins de fer du Midi et du Canal latéral en la Garonne , the station has played a fundamental role in the development of tourism and transportation in the region. At 427 meters above sea level, the station is located in a strategic point that facilitates access to the well-known tourist towns of Vilafranca de Conflent and Banys de Vernet, places that attract visitors for their rich medieval history and their thermal waters, respectively.

The particularity of this station lies in its transshipment function, being a terminal at kilometer point 513,126 of the standard gauge line from Perpinyà and origin of the meter gauge line towards La Tor de Querol. This infrastructure allows a fluid connection between TER Occitanie standard gauge trains and the famous Yellow Train, a tourist line that runs along the picturesque Cerdanya line with meter gauge.

In 2021 it was designated as a "Smart Station". This innovation allows for the automated opening and closing of buildings, providing travelers with efficient shelter from the elements. This transformation is part of a larger effort to improve the user experience and integrate advanced technologies into the daily operation of the station.

The passenger building, located to the right of the tracks when looking in the direction Perpignan, offers a comfortable and accessible base for travelers arriving or departing. The facilities include several stopping tracks for trains and a total of six tracks for the Groc Train depot and workshops, being a vital center for the maintenance and logistics of the region's railway fleet.

With this rich history and an integral role in regional connectivity and development, the Vilafranca de Conflent station continues to be a living testimony of the history and evolution of rail transport in one of the most picturesque regions of France.
