The Torre Baró Neighborhood

It is a popular belief that the Torre Baró neighborhood takes its name from the Torre Baró castle. However, the reality is that, since the 14th century, there have been other nearby constructions called Torre del Baró. This was because the entire area, including Vallbona, belonged to the barons of Pinós, who built various monumental constructions over the years. One of these was located right next to where the current Renfe/ADIF station is.

The current tower is within the Collserola mountain range, in the Roquetes hills. This building, a tower in the form of a fortress (probably intended to be a hotel), was part of an urbanization project in this part of the mountain aimed at creating a garden city for the working class. However, the project failed, and the building was left unfinished.

The Torre Baró Station

The Torre Baró-Vallbona station, formerly known simply as Torre Baró, is located in the Nou Barris district of Barcelona, near Montcada i Reixac, in Catalonia.

Its origin dates back to 1862, when the railway line connecting Manresa with Barcelona via Montcada was inaugurated. Initially, the station had a rectangular, ground-level building and two main tracks with side platforms.

Over the years, the station has undergone several transformations:

  • In 1949, a stop was added thanks to an agreement with the Association of Small Property Owners of the Torre del Baró Urbanization. This stop was modified to include a third track that connected to the Sant Andreu Arenal workshops.
  • During the 1970s, it was modernized to integrate into the commuter network.
  • In the 1990s, the original passenger building was demolished, and a new access with elevators was created. The tracks and platforms were also improved, including the removal of the old workshop track to expand platform 2.
  • In 2019, the platforms were extended and improved, reaching a length of 200 meters.
  • Finally, in February 2023, the station was officially renamed Torre Baró-Vallbona, unifying the name with the nearby metro station.

Current Station Configuration

Currently, the Torre Baró-Vallbona station has two main tracks (tracks 1 and 2) with side platforms partially covered by metal canopies. Passengers can access the platforms through an underground passage equipped with stairs and elevators. This passage connects to the main entrance of the station, which is located at a lower level than the tracks.

At the entrance, users find ticket offices, ticket vending machines, and fare barriers for entry and exit. Additionally, the station has a direct street exit at the ends of the platforms towards Sant Andreu.

Rail Services

The station is part of the R3, R4, R7, and R12 lines of Rodalies de Catalunya, offering medium-distance services operated by Renfe. The main destinations of these services include Lleida, Cervera, Manresa, Hospitalet de Llobregat, and Barcelona.

During the week, the frequency of trains is high, with up to six trains daily in each direction. Additionally, the station offers a connection with the line 11 of the Barcelona Metro, facilitating the interchange of passengers between train and metro services.
