The La Sagrera-Meridiana station was officially inaugurated on February 20, 2011.

This station is located in Barcelona, in the district of Sant Andreu, La Sagrera neighborhood, specifically under the Meridiana Avenue. This interchange station is served by the R3, R4, and R12 lines of Rodalies de Catalunya. This project emerged when the State Society for Land Transport Infrastructure awarded its construction to COMSA at a cost of 34 million euros.

Before 2011, there were two Barcelona Metro stations underground, one on each side of the tunnel, which were connected by stairs that crossed the Renfe/ADIF tunnel. This Renfe/ADIF tunnel did not have any stops on this section, being just a regular tunnel segment.

Therefore, the construction of the new interchange involved modifying the original tunnel's gradient and extending the structure to reach 370 meters. This process required interrupting the rail service for five months.

Being strategically located between the tunnels of the L1 and L5 metro lines in Barcelona, the station facilitated efficient and quick interchange between different modes of transport.

Characteristics of the Barcelona - La Sagrera - Meridiana station

The La Sagrera-Meridiana station is a large interchange in the northern area of Barcelona. It allows connections between various metro and commuter train lines, offering an integrated service to users in Barcelona and its surroundings.

It has two main entrances, both located on Meridiana Avenue, with entries from the sea and mountain sides, equipped with fixed stairs, escalators, and elevators. The common lobby with the metro facilitates ticket purchases and access to different platforms.

The station's lower level houses the two main tracks and a 200-meter-long and 6.4-meter-wide central platform. This feature was heavily criticized at the time of the inauguration, as this narrowness does not match the expected passenger volume. However, this is due to the lack of available space unless the Barcelona Metro stations were completely remodeled, which would have significantly increased the budget.

Importance as an interchange station

La Sagrera-Meridiana currently connects with the L1, L5, L9, and L10 metro lines, and in the future, it is expected to connect with the L4 line.

With the completion of the L9 and L10 lines and the connection to the L4 line, it is estimated that La Sagrera-Meridiana will be used daily by about 120,000 people, consolidating itself as the station with the highest passenger volume in Catalonia.

This infrastructure is not only key to mobility within Barcelona but also benefits residents of nearby locations such as Vallès Occidental, Badalona, and Santa Coloma de Gramenet, among others.
